Bempu: A life saviour for newborn babies

22:36 6
Bempu is a Bangalore based medical device social enterprise that is helping babies to fight Hypothermia.
Newborn babies are vulnerable to infections and sudden temperature changes which can eventually result in their unnatural and untimely death.

www.blogmantra16.blogspot.in
 Ratul Narain, Founder Bempu
The 31 year old Ratul Narain is the founder of Bempu. He did his bachelors in biomechanical engineering and masters in mechanical engineering from Stanford. Ratul also worked at Johnson & Johnson's for six years in cardiovascular space followed by a year at Embrace innovations in the neonatal health space.
He wanted to make something that would create a massive impact. He says that if you make a difference to a baby's life, it actually has a drastic impact on the next 60-80 years of their life.

Why these bands are required?

Whenever there is a sudden temperature change in the baby's body, body reacts to this by burning the fat inside, which results in the by-production of acids in the baby's body and this begin's to limit the baby's breathing. If the baby is unable to breathe then the oxygen supply is cut off, which can tend to organ damage. Premature babies which are more prone to this risk of hypothermia can often have organ and developmental issues on getting cold.

How these bands work?

A bempu band is tied to the wrist of the baby, which helps to track the temperature status of the baby.
These bands are made so simple and kept that way so that mothers from all spheres can understand and learn how to use it.
A blue light on the band indicates that the baby is fine, a red light indicates that the temperature has dropped while beeping indicates that the baby needs assistance.

Challenge for the band

Bempu bands work absolutely fine for the first four weeks, and during this course it does not need any charging, how so ever once discharged these bands can be returned, recharged and made fit to use on another baby.
But it is a challenge today because most women leave their village and come to different village for delivering a baby, so this return policy cannot be implemented. Also there are no collection centres that can take a deposit, recharge and reissue them.
Ratul says that they are hoping to address this problem by collaborating with ASHA workers and aanganwadis in the coming months.
And secondly these sweet little babies carry bacteria and it could get transferred to another baby with the band(if reused).

How to get a Bempu band?

The bempu bands need to be prescribed by the doctors. Sold for Rs 2,000, Bempu is currently available in 150 clinics and pharmacies across 11 states in India. Cloud Nine(Gurgaon), Surya Hospital(Pune), and Meenakshi Hospital(Bengaluru) are some of the centres that have been actively prescribing the bands.

What makes Denmark the happiest country of the world?

06:39 0
If there is a place where one can pursue health, wealth and happiness, it has to be Denmark.
Denmark is crowned "the happiest country in the world" by the United Nation's World Happiness Report , 2016.

It bagged the first place for the years 2013 and 2014 as well. But do you wonder, what makes these Danish people, the happiest people in the world ? Don't worry, we have the answer for you.

1. Epitome of togetherness

Credit: hellomagazine
Danes have a special word "Hygge" for that cozy feeling of togetherness. It means relaxing at home with the people you love and care about. Hygge simply refers to flourishing one's social relationship.
In fact they consider home to be the "hygge headquarters".
Danes say that it is their only way to feel warm in a country where it rains or snows every second day.

2. Work life balance

Credit: thelocal
As we have told you earlier that Danes give priority to family and value it beyond anything, their work life balance is simply appreciable.
Average work hours per week: 33
Average annual wages: $46,000
Now we can say that they took the phrase "All work and no play makes jack a dull boy" way to seriously.

3. Clubbing is an emotion

Credit: Orestad
There are more than 16,500 voluntary clubs and associations in Denmark. The membership number is the highest in the world. There are food clubs, hobby clubs, ethnic clubs, cultural associations and sports clubs being the most popular one. About two third of Danes belong to one or more clubs or associations. More than 90% of the children under the age of 13 have a sports club membership.

4. Biking is the norm

Credit: denmark
Danes commute to work every day via bicycle. Denmark has special elevated roads for bicycles. Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark is the most bicycle friendly city of the world. There are more bicycles in Copenhagen than people. So it does not only make these Copenhagners fit but also reduce the carbon emission and contribute to the wealth of the city.

5. Lighting is a tradition

Credit: jels.tk
Whether its Christmas or any ordinary day, the people of Denmark are obsessed with lighting. They hang iconic lampshades and light candles throughout the year. According to the Happiness Research Institute, Danes associate Hygge with light. As many as 28% Danes light candles every day. The American ambassador to Denmark says that "candles create a kind of emotional happiness, an emotional cosiness".

6. Support to Parents

Credit: zimbio
Danish families receive a total of 52 weeks of Paternal leave, while american women scrape by with an average maternal leave of 10.3 weeks. In Denmark, mothers are able to take 18 weeks and fathers receive their own dedicated 2 weeks at up to 100% salary. The rest of the paid time off is up to the family to use as they see fit.
But the benefits does not end here, Danish children get free or low-cost child care.

El Clasico- More than just a game of football

23:01 3

I’m writing this blog in the wake of a tragic plane crash, which took the lives of seventy one out of eighty one souls on board, including most of the squad and staff of Chapecoense football club, who were en route to Columbia to play the first leg final match of the Copa Sudamericana. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. May their souls rest in peace.

On a much lighter note, one of the most happening footballing event is round the corner, with the first El Clasico being played on 3rd of December at Camp Nou, Barcelona.

For those who are unaware, ‘El Clasico’ or ‘The Classic’ is the name given to any football match between Spanish & European giants Real Madrid C.F. and F.C. Barcelona. Other than the UEFA Champions League Final, it is considered to be one of the biggest club football games in the world, and is among the most viewed annual sporting events.

So, following are some of the lesser known facts about one of the most popular rivalries in world sports:

    1.    More than just a game of football

Apart from being a rivalry between the two largest cities of Spain, the rivalry has a political significance too. Real Madrid represents Spain Nationalism, whereas Barcelona represents Catalan Nationalism, which are two conflicting political ideologies in Spain.

El Clasico brings some of the world’s most talented and highest paid footballers against each other, with the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, Bale, Suarez representing both the sides.

Last, but in fact the most important, El Clasico is the fans’ chance to prove their point regarding a never ending debate, Indeed you got this one right, MESSI v/s RONALDO, who is better?

    2.    The di Stefano Incident

The rivalry intensified during 1950’s, when both the clubs disputed over the signing of Argentine striker Alfredo di Stefano. Due to a major misunderstanding on the part of his Columbian club, di Stefano signed for both F.C. Barcelona and Real Madrid C.F. – AT THE SAME TIME! After FIFA’s intervention, it was decided that both the clubs had to share the player in alternate seasons. This left the clubs and fans fuming.
Somehow, Real’s then president Santiago Bernabeu managed to convince di Stefano to join his side, and the rest is history.

Stefano is sixth highest goalscorer in LaLiga (Spanish top division league), and is Madrid’s highest goalscorer in the El Clasico.

Stefano also helped the Madrid side win five consecutive European championships (now UEFA Champions League).

3.    Luis Figo’s Transfer

F.C. Barcelona’s vice-captain and charismatic striker Luis Figo was in his top form in 2000 when Real Madrid’s then presidential candidate and current president Florentino Perez offered him $2.4 million to join Real, if he won the election. Initially, Figo denied any interest, but eventually joined Real , allegedly due to the amount of money offered.

What followed next was the wrath of Barcelona fans all over the world. On his return to Barcelona in a Real Madrid shirt, banners with "Judas", "Scum" and "Mercenary" were hung around the stadium. Thousands of fake 10,000 peseta notes had been printed and emblazoned with his image, were among the missiles of oranges, bottles, cigarette lighters, even a couple of mobile phones were thrown at him. Among all these, the most bizzare thing to be thrown at Figo was a ‘Pig’s head’.

    4.    The ‘Pasillo’

‘The Pasillo’ or Guard of Honour is another rarely known El Clasico tradition, where the fans of opposite team applaud their rival team squad, while coming out of the tunnel, if the LaLiga title has already been decided.

It's only happened three times in El Clasico history - twice for Real Madrid and once for Barcelona. The last time it was performed in 2007-08 season.

    5.    Double Agents

A total of twenty one players have played for both the rivals at some point of time in their lives, including the likes of Samuel Eto’o, Brazilian Ronaldo, Luis Enrique (Barcelona’s current manager) and most notoriously, Luis Figo.

    6.    Facts & Figures

a.) A total of 264 El Clasicos have been played, with Real winning 97 and Barcelona winning 109 of them. 58 matches ended in a draw.

b.) Biggest win came on 19th June, 1943, When Real crushed Barcelona 11-1 in a Copa del ray match.

c.) Lionel Messi has scored the most goals (21), most hattricks (2) and provided the most assists (13).

d.) Manuel Sanchis (Real Madrid) holds the record for most El Clasico appearances (43).

e.) A Champions League final has never been an El Clasico, and is said to be one of the most awaited events in football.

So, don’t forget to catch El Clasico live on 3rd December at 08:45 pm IST, only on Sony Six and Six HD.
